"The importance of signs breeding signs remains very evident; gestures that are thought through, calculated because every sign, however small, is intended to convey an idea or an image with a precise significance. But if the desired effect is to be obtained, it is essential to be in possession of a technique that is synonymous to the artist with knowledge itself. This technique is, indeed, that which makes it possible to display the needs of a spirit connected to the conditions at the time, and the sole reason behind the artist's work.'
'In the 'grattages' the sign is restrained by its liberty, proportioned according to its fluctuation. Nothing is left to chance.'
'The signs have the function of freeing the light - colour, but they must then physically disappear so as to be picked up only by thought. They are, in fact, signs built of light. Light is conceived as having a structural value, it must not be painted, evoked by brush - strokes, but must be built within the painting. And in a work that generates this light, the painting itself becomes a luminous 'spring'."
